Downtown School Chess Club
Chess is a valuable skill that can boost confidence, as well as focus, analytical thinking, and problem solving skills. It is a great opportunity to learn good sportsmanship and courtesy as well.
Chess Club will be on Tuesday from 2:45pm to 3:45pm and will run for 8 weeks. Chess Club does not meet when school is not in session or dismisses early.
January 7th, 14th, and 28th (no club 1/21)
February 4th, 11th, and 25th (no club 2/18)
March 3rd, and 10th
The first class will be utilized as a time for the Coach and students to get to know each other. Coach Bill will assess each individual student’s chess knowledge during this time. After the skills of each student are evaluated, Students will be placed in the “beginner” section or “intermediate” section.
Each class will begin with a 15-20-minute lesson. Worksheets, based on ability, will be incorporated into the lesson to reinforce the idea. Students will be allowed to play after the lesson is completed. Mini tournaments will be held for students who wish to play competitive chess.
The focus is on teaching the following topics:
How to record moves
Each student will be required to demonstrate their knowledge of each topic. Extra homework
will allow students to earn “pawn dollars” which can be redeemed for prizes.
Downtown Chess Club is lead by Head Coach Bill Broich. Bill is a National Tournament Director and a Director At Large on the Board of the Iowa State Chess Association, the Chair of the Scholastic Committee for the Iowa State Chess Association, an International FIDE Arbiter, and on the board of Chess it up, Iowa. He is an active member of the Chess Community and enjoys growing the Iowa Scholastic Chess community.
